"ARCH OF CONSTANTINE"
Rome, Italy
Sometimes when I take a photograph I know immediately that I want to see it as a framed print. Thats exactly how I felt about this one, taken after a lengthy dinner at the Michelin starred Aroma Ristorante which is located right next to the Colosseum in Rome.
The Arch of Constantine was completed around 315 AD and dedicated to (you guessed it) Constantine the Great; it also served as the finish line for the marathon event during the 1960 olympics. I love visiting these busy landmarks late at night. You get to see them in more dramatic lighting and there are usually no crowds to contend with. It's also how I captured the photo at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin...have it to yourself around midnight.
A great in depth writeup of the Arch of Constantine is available from smarthistory.org, they break down the history and explain the detail of the relief work on the arch.
This photo is one of my favorites…when I switched to our current fulfillment partner this is first print I ordered. So much detail and contrast in a black and white piece.
